Methane and Carbon Dioxide Separation Equipment

There are several biogas purification technologies and types of equipment that allow the biomethane production by eliminating carbon dioxide from the biogas: physical and chemical absorption, low temperature separation, biological fixation, membrane separation, etc. From the above mentioned methods the most common one used in natural gas industry is the chemical absorption process. The major method applied for biogas purification was physical absorption technology. However, there was an increasing trend of biogas purification plant usage that employs membrane separation technology for methane and carbon dioxide separation. One of the main advantages of this technology is the compactness and simplicity of the equipment and low investment costs, thus this technology is becoming increasingly popular among the methane manufacturers.

Operation: the pressurized biogas is supplied to membrane fiber where the fast flowing gas is evacuated and the low flowing gas is retained. Thus the concentration of the membrane passing biomethane can reach up to 99.5 percent.

Subject to the desired membrane capacity, they are interconnected parallely, and this connection method allows to achieve the desired capacity of biogas purification equipment. Also, subject to the desired purification quality, the membrane modules are interconnected to one, two or three stage structures.

As representatives of one of the global leaders - German company Evonic that produces high capacity and productivity biogas purification membranes Sepuran Green, we can offer our clients both high quality products and guarantee long term service of the product, as well as satisfy the customer needs.

When the concentration of methane in the purified biogas is over 97 %, it becomes biomethane that can be directly transported to the natural gas network or to consumers, as well to be uses as vehicle fuel. This also helps to achieve the objective of the European Union directive to reach 20 % level of biofuel usage by 2020.
Should there be a possibility to purchase the biomethane energy directly from manufacturers (as it is the case with sun, wind and hydro energy), the biomethane application possibilities would significantly increase. Alas, so far there is no such option, thus in order to transport the biomethane to the consumer, it has to be pressurized or liquefied. Small amount biogas liquefaction is expensive, thus it is not cost-effective. Currently, biomethane can be liquefied to 250-300 bar by CNG compressors and transported to consumers.
